Miniature dachshunds are one of the most charming, entertaining, and occasionally exasperating dog breeds on the planet. Before you bring one home, here are five things that will make your life a whole lot easier.
1. They Are Smarter Than They Let On
Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers independently, which means they were designed to make their own decisions. That intelligence is adorable, and occasionally maddening. They will figure out how to open things, how to manipulate you with their eyes, and how to conveniently forget a command they’ve known for months when there’s something more interesting happening. Consistency and patience in training is everything.
2. Their Backs Are Their Most Vulnerable Asset
IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) is the number one health concern in dachshunds, and every owner should know about it before bringing one home. The long spine and short legs that make them so cute also make them prone to disc problems. The good news: most cases are preventable with a few simple habits. Keep your dachshund at a healthy weight. Use ramps instead of letting them jump on and off furniture. Avoid activities that put excessive strain on the spine. At Cherokee Hill, we health test all of our parent dogs for IVDD to reduce genetic risk in our litters.
3. They Were Born to Dig and Follow a Scent
Don’t be surprised when your dachshund starts excavating your backyard or pulls you down the street following a smell you can’t detect. This is deeply hardwired behavior. A securely fenced yard is a must. Dachshunds are escape artists with a nose that will take them a long way from home before they realize they’ve wandered.
4. They Bond Hard
Dachshunds are not independent dogs. They want to be with you. Specifically: under a blanket, on your lap, or pressed against your leg at all times. This makes them wonderful companions and also means they can develop separation anxiety if not introduced to alone time early and gradually. Start short from day one and build up slowly.
5. They Are Worth Every Single Second
For all their stubbornness and drama and occasional chaos, dachshunds are one of the most loyal, loving, and entertaining companions you will ever have. They will make you laugh every single day. They will warm your feet every single night. And they will look at you like you are the most important person in the world, which, to them, you are.
If you’re ready for that kind of love, we’d love to help you find your perfect match. Check out our available puppies or join our waitlist for an upcoming litter.
